Toby Sowery demonstrated exceptional strategy and composure at the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy Toronto GP this weekend. Driving the #51 Global Karting League / Vuzix Honda for Dale Coyne Racing, Sowery turned a challenging 21st starting position into an impressive 15th-place finish, showcasing the strategic side of his race craft on the demanding streets of Toronto.
The 85-lap race tested drivers with its tight corners and unpredictable incidents, but Sowery’s calculated approach paid off. Gaining three positions early in the race, he reached 18th place before executing a well-timed pit stop on Lap 20. The race took a dramatic turn with a multi-car collision leading to a red flag. Despite minor front wing damage sustained in the chaos, Sowery maintained his focus, navigating through the field to secure a strong finish.
Reflecting on the race, Sowery stated:
“We ended up 15th, which is quite a step forward from where we qualified, which is always a bonus. There were some big crashes out there, a lot of events going on, and we were able to keep it clean. The car has been great all weekend, and my job was to secure value points for the team this weekend, which we did. Hopefully next time we’ll take another step forward.”
This performance in Toronto follows Sowery’s remarkable debut at Mid-Ohio, where he gained 11 positions to finish 13th. These consistent showings underscore his adaptability and potential in the highly competitive INDYCAR SERIES.
As part of a three-race deal with Dale Coyne Racing, including the BitNile.com Grand Prix of Portland, Sowery has solidified his reputation as a rising talent to watch. His strategic brilliance and race craft leave little doubt that his future in INDYCAR is bright.
